CALM
The CALM program is a cognitive-behavioral group training program intended to reduce anger, violence and emotional loss of control in males. The program comprises 24 sessions, and it teaches the participants the skills necessary to reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of their anger. As a result, the training helps to lessen the likelihood of the occurrence of aggression, as well as other strong negative emotions (guilt, shame, jealousy, etc.).

The CALM program sessions are practical, highly structured, sequential and designed for delivery to groups at risk of inappropriate or violent behaviour -- and in many cases, criminal recidivism.

Program Scope
The CALM program curriculum is made up of six sections including:

  • Introduction and Motivational Enhancement
  • Managing Arousal
  • Thinking Patterns
  • Assertiveness and Communication
  • Other Emotions
  • Relapse Prevention

There are two options for the CALM program:
  1. CALM Coach Certification Training Program
  2. CALM Coach Trainer Certification Program (Training for Trainers, aka: T4T)

CALM Coach Certification Training Program
CALM Coach Certificate training is highly structured and intensive. Participants are instructed on program rationale, theoretical understanding of anger and aggression, motivational techniques, cognitive behavior theory, rational-emotive theory, problem solving methods, relapse prevention planning and other key topics pertaining to CALM delivery.

Additionally, the certification process addresses practical aspects of program delivery, and lesson planning and presentation techniques. Importantly, CALM Coach training is highly experiential. Participants are exposed to multiple program delivery styles and all participants experience peer and trainer reviews of their own lesson plans and presentations.

The CALM Coach Certification Program culminates in a certificate upon graduation, and this certificate is a prerequisite for the CALM Coach Trainer Certification Program and other CALM related certification programs.

CALM Coach Trainer Certification Program (Training for Trainers/T4T)
The CALM Coach Trainer Certification program is a program that is specifically for ‘training the trainers’. It is intended for experienced program deliverers who have successfully completed the CALM Coach Certification Program, and have delivered the CALM program to target populations. The Trainer Certification program, which culminates in a graduation certificate, qualifies trainers to train selected front line coaches in the delivery of CALM to participants.
